McGraths Limestone have always been dedicated to maintaining high Health and Safety standards. As we prepare to celebrate 60 years in Business in 2023, we are delighted to have been named the overall ‘Health and Safety Risk Management Winners’ for 2022 by the ICCM in recognition of this commitment.
This award is the result of the high standards and best practices implemented by our Health and Safety Officer Nicky Mulchrone who has overseen every aspect of the Health and Safety system within the quarry over the last 10 years.
In 2017, McGraths Limestone was awarded the ‘National Health & Safety Risk Management and Best Quarry Award by Independent Concrete Control Management Clg (ICCM). At the time, the independent health and safety adjudicator who conducted the inspection praised McGraths Limestone for having ‘a well laid out premises, a well-presented entrance and a high standard of safety management throughout the quarry.’ It was also noted that we have a good traffic management plan in operation, and that substantial resources were invested in health surveillance for our employees.
The following year, McGraths Limestone won the 2018 Award for Behavioural Safety, Safety Culture, Leadership and Awareness from the Irish Concrete Federation from the ICCM. We also were awarded the Certificate of Commendation; Initiative in the area of Health & Safety – General Safety at the ICF Health and Safety Awards 2018.
In 2020 Nicky was the recipient of the National Health and Safety Risk Management Safety Officer Award by the ICCM. As Health and Safety Officer, Nicky manages all aspects of quarry safety, focusing on the education and training of staff. Over the last 2 years, she has researched and invested in innovative technology that allows employees to safely carry out duties with minimum risk to themselves or customers, including automated safety barriers and the Flex management system, which offers safe, modern solutions for our fleet.
This year, The John Maguire Memorial Cup was presented by the Chairman of Independent Concrete Control Management Clg (ICCM) Frank Healy Jnr, to our Health and Safety Officer Nicky Mulchrone and Billy McGrath at their Super AGM on Wednesday 28th September in Birr, Co Offaly.
This award is a recognition of the hard work accomplished by all our employees in McGraths Limestone. Our safety officer has implemented best practices and training within the quarry, and our employees diligently work together so that these safety measures are followed, ensuring our quarry is a safe place for staff and customers alike.
Nicky has acknowledged that an award like this belongs to everyone.
‘Winning this award is great recognition of our employees’ commitment to health and safety on a day-to-day basis,’ she said. ‘I am proud to facilitate the efforts of all involved in improving health and safety in the company and I’m looking forward to building on the accomplishments to date.’
In 2017, when presented with the ‘National Health & Safety Risk Management and Best Quarry Award, Nicky said that “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, and that by encouraging employees to work together it is possible improve health and safety throughout the quarry, making it a safer and healthier environment for everyone” and this is still true today.
